Wet plate collodion has experienced a resurgence because of both its beauty and the unique images it produces. This is a fun yet intensive workshop designed to give students hands-on experience with this 19th-century process. Using large format, 4x5 cameras, participants will receive individual attention as they make one-of-a-kind tintypes (direct positives on an aluminum sheet) and glass negatives (negative on clear glass plate). Among other techniques, students will learn how to prepare glass, pour and sensitize collodion, properly expose and develop plates, apply a protective varnish and learn how to mix some of the basic chemistry needed.

All chemistry, media, and cameras will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own equipment if you have it. Please bring aprons or wear old clothing (materials are not overly toxic but can easily stain clothing).
