I make authentic, in-camera, wet plate collodion tintypes (images on aluminum) and ambrotypes (images on glass). It’s one of the earliest forms of photography and it’s pretty cool.

Process

Using the wet plate collodion method, every tintype and ambrotype image is made directly onto a metal or glass plate that has been placed directly in the camera. These plates are individually prepared and must be exposed and developed within just a few minutes.

Mastering the chemistry, lighting, and careful timing of collodion portraiture is a delicate balance of skill and pace and the result is a truly unique, hand-crafted object. Like the tintypes and ambrotypes from the 19th century, each image is a historical document. With proper care, it will last hundreds of years, far longer than any other photograph.
